Instructions

Start by warming the milk and water. They should feel warm to the touch but not hot. If the liquid is too hot, it can kill the yeast and prevent the bread from rising. A temperature around 38–43°C (100–110°F) is ideal.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk, warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and allow the mixture to sit for about 5 to 10 minutes. The yeast should become foamy on the surface. This indicates that it is active and ready to use.

Add the melted butter and egg to the yeast mixture. Stir until combined.

In a separate bowl, mix the flour and salt together. Gradually add the flour mixture to the liquid ingredients. Stir with a wooden spoon or spatula until a rough dough begins to form.

Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface. Knead the dough for about 8 to 12 minutes. During kneading, the dough will become smoother, more elastic, and less sticky. If the dough sticks excessively to your hands, add a small amount of flour, one tablespoon at a time. Avoid adding too much flour because it can make the bread dense.

To test whether the dough is properly kneaded, gently stretch a small piece. If it stretches thinly without tearing immediately, the gluten has developed well.

Place the dough into a lightly greased bowl. Turn it once so all sides are lightly coated. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap.

Allow the dough to rise in a warm place for 1 to 1½ hours, or until it has doubled in size. Rising time may vary depending on the temperature of your kitchen.

Once the dough has doubled, gently press down on it to release excess air. Transfer it back to a work surface and knead lightly for about 1 minute.

Shape the dough into a round loaf or an oval loaf that will fit comfortably inside your air fryer basket or baking pan. If using a baking pan, lightly grease it before placing the dough inside.

Cover the shaped dough again and allow it to rise for another 30 to 45 minutes. During this second rise, the dough should become noticeably puffier.

Preheat the air fryer to 160°C (320°F) for about 5 minutes.

Carefully place the risen dough into the air fryer. If desired, lightly brush the top with milk or beaten egg for a more golden crust.

Cook at 160°C (320°F) for approximately 20 to 25 minutes. Check the bread after 15 minutes. If the top is browning too quickly, loosely place a piece of aluminum foil over it.

Continue cooking until the loaf is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. An internal temperature of about 90–95°C (195–205°F) indicates the bread is fully baked.

Remove the bread from the air fryer and place it on a wire rack. Brush the top with a little melted butter while it is still warm. This helps create a softer crust and adds flavor.

Allow the bread to cool for at least 30 minutes before slicing. Cutting too early can make the inside gummy because the bread is still finishing its internal cooking process.

Serving Suggestions

Serve warm with butter, honey, jam, or cheese. It can also be used for sandwiches, toast, garlic bread, or breakfast dishes.

Storage

Store the bread in an airtight container or bread bag at room temperature for up to 3 days. For longer storage, wrap tightly and freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw at room temperature before serving.
